Dear Lute enthusiast,

There are still places left on the Lute Society annual residential weekend at Christ Church, Oxford, England, 20-22 August. It’s a beautiful location of course, see and our particular reason for meeting there is to mark our publication of the facsimile of the greatest of all English lute manuscripts, Matthew Holmes’s lute book, [Cambridge MS Dd.2.11]; Holmes was praecentor in Christ Church Cathedral in the 1590s.

Music making will focus on music that was played at the college at the end of the 16th century, including the music of Holmes’s music manuscripts.

The faculty will include Jakob Lindberg and Jacob Heringman; and the weekend will begin with a recital from them in Christ Church cathedral, including music from Matthew Holmes’s lute book.

The archivist is preparing an exhibition especially for us in the archive which will include the following incredibly rare and precious items:

– documents with Matthew Holmes’ signature

– partbooks from the Morley consort lessons

– lute fragments Mus MS 1280

– the Talbot MS,

– Holborne Pavans galliards and almains

– Whytehorn songs of 1571

– Musica Transalpina

– Morley ballets

Amazing! Not to be missed!

I will bring some works from modern editions of these very same sources for us to perform.

If you’d like a booking form, just email me back at and I will mail you one.

I hope to see you at what promises to be a very special weekend.

best wishes

Chris Goodwin
